Building the Best BLT

A bacon-lettuce-tomato sandwich is always satisfying

I can eat a BLT for breakfast lunch or dinner.  They are one of those sandwiches that never get old and even take on a new life when updated. The one from my childhood included the basics but over the years my go-to BLT is even better than before.

A great BLT should include the best ingredients like thick-cut bacon, heirloom tomatoes and the right bread.

Start with the best ingredients:

  1. Bread-  A good hearty bread is needed to absorbs the moisture from the tomato and mayonnaise, whole grain or sourdough work great.

  2. Bacon - thick cut, hickory smoked, crispy but not brittle

  3. Tomato - heirloom or vine ripened, one big thick slice will do. Sprinkle with salt

  4. Lettuce - little gems, bibb or romaine are the best

  5. Avocado - perfectly ripe, cut into long slices, sprinkled with salt and cracked pepper

  6. Mayonaisse - Best foods or Hellmans

Thick cut bacon cooked crisp but not brittle is a must.

Assembly:

  1. Toast the bread

  2. Spread mayo on both sides

  3. Lay avocado slices on one side, smash into bread with a knife add cracked pepper and a light sprinkle of salt

  4. Add bacon on top of avocado 3-4 slices

  5. Tomato goes on top of the bacon, one big slice will do or 2-3 smaller slices

  6. Place lettuce on top of the tomato, press down lightly

  7. Add the second slice of bread on top, squish slightly, slice in half

Eat and enjoy with one or all three of the recommended sides.
