Climbing Roses

It’s never too late

About two years ago, we had our front yard relandscaped. We live on a corner, so our yard is seen from two different streets, and it needed an overhaul. I wanted to add a trellis for roses in addition to the flower beds, new trees, and evergreen plantings. Unfortunately, the spot I had in mind was west-facing, and my neighbors warned me that nothing grows on that side because it gets afternoon sun.

I took my chances and added an arched trellis and planted roses on either side. Two years later, the results are in, and the roses thrive and impress the neighbors. My advice is that it is never too late to try something new and change up the look in your garden.

Breathtaking climbers

I am lucky to live just a few miles away from what I believe to be some of the most beautiful rose arches anywhere. The Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens have a nearly three-acre rose garden that boasts nearly 3,000 plants, many of them cultivated varieties. The towering arches are some of my favorites and bloom at different times, so there’s always something to capture your attention.

With Southern California’s mild climate the roses can be enjoyed from late March until Thanksgiving. You have to visit the gardens to completely understand the breadth and magnificence of the many varieties. They also have an area where all the roses are heavily fragrant, so stopping to smell the roses is a must.
