Cake Stands Aren't Just for Cakes

A cake stand can literally elevate your display

I’ve collected assorted cake stands over the years. I have a lovely oversized French porcelain cake stand shorter than most that can hold entire appetizer displays. Hotel silver cake stands in various dimensions and sizes can be stacked or used individually for anything from candles to cupcakes to finger sandwiches. Some of my favorites are from John Derian in his decoupage patterns. I have these all over the house and use them for mini guest soaps, a grouping of American flags, to actual cakes! There is nothing a cake stand can’t do.

Cake stands are great pieces to display food in different elevations

Martha Stewart uses cake stands for shrimp cocktail.

A beverage bar needs a little interest. A cake stand can hold garnishes or a petite arrangement of flowers.

My great find in New Orleans was a French oversized cake stand. I use it constantly because it can hold entire pies and mini appetizer displays.

Almost anything goes when using a cake stand for entertaining. I like to mix materials when displaying food on them. I can put dessert on a simple Depression Glass stand and use a variety of sizes of hotel silver cake stands on a bar: lemons and limes on one, fresh herbs on another, and even cocktail napkins on a third. There’s something about elevating food when entertaining that I really like. By mixing sizes and elevations, you allow more guests to move in on the action and not wait to get the food they want.

My mother would be proud
