Winter Whites

A fashion trend I’m seeing for fall and winter is lots of white. I grew up obeying the old warning that a style-conscious person should not don the milky hue from Labor Day to Memorial Day. This rule was created during the late 19th century to separate the old money elitists from the new money group. Memorial Day christened the first day of the summer holiday season, and those with money packed up and headed to their vacation homes in the Hamptons or along the Hudson. Wearing white signified leisure, and when Labor Day rolled around, it was time to go back to normalcy: school started again, and your wardrobe focused on fall.

Fast forward to 2020, and we know white is not a summer-only color anymore. Design houses are showing winter white in everything, from jewelry to handbags to boots. Take a look at what I love.

There’s no right or wrong way to wear the many shades of white. One of my favorite combinations is pairing bright white pants with a creamier white sweater. Also, using neutrals like light gray or sandy colors blend nicely with whites. Packing for a trip with many shades of white is a breeze.

Anything goes!

There are always people who want to attribute everything in etiquette to snobbery. There were many little rules that people did dream up in order to annoy those from whom they wished to disassociate themselves. But I do not believe this (wearing white after Labor Day is not allowed) is one of them.

Sweaters take on some interesting necklines and hemlines.
